Achieve multiple orgasms - because you can
Why stick with one, when you can ride on wave after wave of orgasmic bliss - to complete fulfillment?
Many women are capable of having multiple orgasms – they just don’t know it. With care and tenderness from a loving partner, and the willingness to experiment, they may find they can reach heights which they never thought possible.
There are four stages of arousal and orgasm in a woman. In the first – the excitement phase – her nipples become erect, her heart rate quickens and her breasts swell. At the same time, her vagina expands and lubricates and her clitoris enlarges.
In the next – plateau – phase the clitoris withdraws, the top end of the vagina balloons out, and she progresses towards the third phase – orgasm. Here, her breathing may become heavy, she may twitch or writhe with pleasure and cry or shout out. The muscles of her vagina contract rhythmically. After several contractions at the climax of her orgasm, her body goes into the final – resolution – stage. Things settle down and slowly, over perhaps ten minutes to half an hour, if unstimulated, her body returns to its sexually unexcited state. It is during this last phase that many women can have another orgasm.
In the 1940s, the American sex researcher Kinsey found that one in seven women sometimes experienced multiple orgasms. Terman, another researcher, found the figures to be much the same. However, in the 1960s Masters and Johnson discovered that, given enough stimulation, most women were capable of having more than one orgasm. They found that, in most cases, a woman was ‘capable of having a second, third, fourth or even fifth and sixth orgasm before she is fully satisfied’. Many of the women were able to have five or six full orgasms within as many minutes.
A more recent survey of 106,000 American women of all ages showed that 67% had multiple orgasms most of the time, with one in seven of all those over 35 saying they had them every time they made love. Of those who had multiple orgasms, 66% had between six and ten and 6% had eleven or more.
Masturbation
Clearly, many more women have multiple orgasms than is generally realized, but the vast majority do not have them from intercourse alone. It is this that makes many men think that their partner is not multi-orgasmic when she is. Most women have multiple orgasms only when masturbating – probably because they can control the stimulation and maintain stimulation for far longer than is possible during intercourse.
Show your partner how to use his fingers to stimulate you during the build-up to orgasm.
Masters and Johnson found that the largest numbers of orgasms occurred when women used vibrators. Some women – probably about one in three – are totally satisfied with a single climax, in the same way that a man is. Indeed, many women say that stimulation after orgasm is painful and unpleasant and that it kills any further pleasure for them.
But just because direct clitoral stimulation produces their best orgasm first time, it does not mean that it should be used for subsequent orgasms. Indeed, because the clitoris in the resolution phase is still erect and has now re-emerged from under its protective hood, it is highly sensitive and direct stimulation may feel painful. The secret is to use other methods of stimulating the clitoris indirectly. These include caressing the whole vulva area, keeping away from the clitoris, intercourse itself, and stimulating some other part of the woman’s body altogether.
This is why it is so common for a woman who has climaxed before intercourse, by direct clitoral stimulation, to come again when the couple are having intercourse, when clitoral stimulation is usually indirect.
Are multiple orgasms necessary?
Although, when it comes to human sexuality, there is no absolute truth to the ‘more is better’ theory, many women claim that their second or third orgasm is much more intense than the first one.
For a woman on her own, the pleasure of multiple orgasms is purely selfish – and why should it not be? Women, unlike men, have been endowed with the capability to climax time and again until they are exhausted physically. And for a man, a multiple orgasmic woman is a great turn-on – although a truly insatiable one can be tedious to satisfy time after time!
In the mood
Naturally, not all women have repeated climaxes every time they have sex or masturbate. The best times, according to most women, are just before, during or just after a period, during the middle three months of pregnancy and under intense stimulation.
While a few women have multiple orgasms every time they masturbate or make love, most need the mood to be just right, and to have plenty of stimulation and foreplay as well as prolonged stimulation of the right area of their body. Some women, on the other hand, are afraid to let themselves go totally, under the misapprehension that they might turn into nymphomaniacs and start chasing men!
The 'doggy' sex position is one of the best for achieving multiple orgasms, as it enables him to stimulate her G-spot.
For the woman who feels she might be multiple orgasmic and has contented herself with a single orgasm, there are a number of things she can do. Even if it does not work out, the following tips are pleasurable in themselves. All they require is the ability to relax and the attention of a loving partner.
Start experimenting on your own during masturbation. Next time you feel especially sexy, perhaps around period time, get very aroused and then, when you have had one orgasm, experiment with other ways of stimulating yourself until you have another. If you usually climax with your fingers stimulating your clitoris, try a vibrator around the area until you come again.
