Gay rights activist Edith Windsor has passed away aged 88, her wife Judith Kasen-Windsor confirmed to the New York Times. Windsor’s Supreme Court case back in 2013 overturned the Defense of Marriage Act, giving same-sex married couples federal recognition in the US for the first time.nAfter her previous wife, Thea Spyer, died she sued the US government after being ordered to pay $363,053 (£224,940) in federal estate tax. They had been together for 44 years and married in Canada in 2007.
